The Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA), a national trade association that represents solar energy companies in Canada, has named Solar Ship’s Brantford off-grid hangar project, with system implementation provided by Canadian Energy,  as Game Changer Project of the Year.
“We operate in remote regions around the world, and this project offers a template for cutting our operational reliance on fossil fuels,” said Lewis Reford, head of Solar Ship’s Power Camps division. “There is no reason for buildings not to incorporate PV power in their top level design requirements, based on what our Brantford hangar project has shown us.”
The award, which was presented to Solar Ship and Canadian Energy at the 2016 CanSIA Game Changer Awards held at the Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, Ont., acknowledges the rapidly changing landscape in solar deployment, where large off-grid buildings can now cost-effectively supply their own power needs using photovoltaic power and battery storage, rather than relying on a utility grid connection or a diesel generator.
“We are thrilled to receive this award alongside Solar Ship from CanSIA,” said Ryan Magee, head of renewable solutions at Canadian Energy. “It’s an honour to be recognized by our Canadian industry peers as we push forward on combining fossil-free power with battery storage in commercial scale projects.”
This award honours Solar Ship (project owner and developer) and Canadian Energy (system supplier) for demonstrating a reliable and cost-effective system that brings the future of building-integrated distributed generation forward to today—a future that puts Canadian renewable energy technology at the forefront of a global tipping point.
