Julian Fantino replaces Bev Oda as international co-operation minister

Julian Fantino has left his post as junior defence minister for military procurement to become the new international co-operation minister – the position recently vacated by the retiring Bev Oda.
Bernard Valcourt takes over Fantino’s previous post in what the Prime Minister’s spokesman said would be the only cabinet shuffle. Pundits had been predicting a sizable shakeup this summer.
Fantino, a former head of the Toronto Police and Ontario Provincial Police, had been targeted by opposition parties due to his staunch defence of the government’s plan to purchase the costly F-35 fighters. That task will now be passed to Valcourt, who had previously served as a cabinet minister under Brian Mulroney.
