Coastal Drone Co makes drone pilot certificates easier to achieve for hobbyists & pros

In a new partnership with Best Buy Canada, Coastal Drone Co of Langley, B.C.  — part of the Westlund Group of Companies — is now offering its online drone pilot ground school to Best Buy Canada drone customers, which is intended to help drone operators meet the new Transport Canada regulations announced last year.

The new regulations, enacted on June 1, 2019, require all pilots of drones weighing over 249 grams (0.5 pounds) to acquire a pilot certificate. A basic pilot certificate allows recreational or professional operators to fly drones in uncontrolled airspace only, 30 meters (100 feet) away from people, and restricts flights overhead people. While an advanced certificate allows drone pilots to fly in controlled airspace, closer than 30 meters to people, and overhead of people.

Coastal Drone president Alec Wilson, who is also a drone and helicopter pilot, said drones are a growth category, but people get discouraged by the complexity of aviation regulations.

“We’re stepping in to provide a clear path to certification which is simple, easy, and straightforward,” he added. “We were the first Canadian company to launch a fully online platform for drone certification and training.”

Initially founded in 2016 to service the growing demand for professional drone consulting, Coastal Drone later transitioned to focus solely on online certification training. The company is now Canada’s largest drone certification and training provider, with over 5,000 pilot enrollments to date.

Partnering with Best Buy Canada, which is the largest seller of drones in the country, is a huge success for Coastal Drone. Wilson said the partnership will allow the company to spread its “quality online drone training resources” farther and wider than ever before.

“We’re really excited to be part of a win-win situation,” Wilson added. “We’re able to provide consumers with education and a path to certification in a growing drone industry, and we’re also able to provide retailers of drones an ability to give their consumers confidence in the products they’re selling and the regulations surrounding them.”

Coastal Drone’s “Drone Pilot Ground School | Basic” course is offered free of charge to anyone who purchases a drone at a Best Buy store in Canada. The course, which is the ground school portion of the Basic program, is intended to serve both drone hobbyists and professional pilots.

Coastal Drone is also offering an advanced certification training program, retailed through Best Buy or available on the Coastal Drone website, which is open to all types of drone pilots — but is most often pursued by professionals, Wilson said.

Getting enrolled in Coastal Drone’s free “Basic” online ground school is a simple, streamlined process. When a consumer purchases a drone at Best Buy, their email is put into the system which then sends them a code they can use to enroll themselves into the Basic ground school course via a welcome email.

The Basic course covers the knowledge areas that Transport Canada expects basic certified pilots to understand, which includes how to identify airspace; regulations; identifying visual line of sight/beyond visual line of sight; situational awareness; navigation; drone maintenance; how turbulence and wind can affect a drone; Notices to Airmen; human factors that can affect safe flight; and more.

The course takes roughly two hours to complete, and is comprised of a series of instructional videos and a practice exam. The platform also features a live chat should the students have any questions.

This helps to prepare drone consumers for the Transport Canada “basic” drone pilot exam, which, if passed, grants a pilot their basic certificate.

“[Transport Canada] actually consulted us to help them create the knowledge requirements for the national regulations, which our VP of operations Kate Klassen championed,” Wilson told Skies. “So, we’ve been involved for quite some time. And all of our courses very closely follow the knowledge requirements set out by Transport Canada under the knowledge document TP 15263 — which is essentially the document that guides the knowledge for the exam.”

For pilots who wish to gain their advanced certificate, Wilson said the Basic course “is not a prerequisite for the advanced. You can start from zero in either of the categories.”

While the Transport Canada drone regulations are only just over a year old, the 24-month recurrency training requirement is not yet valid. Wilson said drone pilots will be able to prove their recurrency by taking a flight test, or by taking a recurrency course — which Coastal Drone is planning to offer in the future.

  1. I passed the basic exam 80% after a couple of weeks review on the subway home in Toronto. The fact that I “May” now have to pay someone every two years who may not have scored as high as I did tell me I’m still certified is not going to happen. Current drone technology is for more reliable than the home made rc aircraft that have been flying unregulated for decades. I will take a Transport Canada continuing Ed course but that it.
