Minister of Transport Marc Garneau visited the Charlo Regional Airport in Charlo, N.B., on April 16 to highlight the recent completion of three safety improvement projects: the purchase of a loader with attachments, a runway snow blower and a friction tester. The loader and snow blower help keep runways, taxiways and the apron clear of ice and snow, and the friction tester will provide timely, accurate and precise wireless recording of runway surface conditions.
Funding of $706,750 came from Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) for these three projects.
Garneau was also updated on the pending delivery of a $246,000 plow truck with dry material spreader. This equipment is also being funded through the ACAP.
A well maintained runway, taxiway and apron free of ice and snow, along with timely reporting of runway landing conditions, are key to ensuring safe usage by aircraft, passengers, and crews, as well as helping to protect costly airport safety assets during airport operations.
