Sponsored by Folio:, the long-running Eddie & Ozzie Awards recognize editorial and design excellence in the publishing industry. This year, Skies was recognized for the new digital magazine format it rolled out with the June/July issue.

“When COVID-19 struck, the publishing industry changed overnight,” said Mike Reyno, co-owner of Skies publisher MHM Publishing. “Although we had always had a digital edition of the magazine, it hadn’t been our top priority. When we made the decision to pause print distribution, we knew we needed to rethink our digital platform to deliver an exceptional reader experience.”

Graphic designer Kaytlyn Wismayer and production manager Jen Colven collaborated to reimagine the digital editions of Skies and its sister publications, Vertical and Vertical Valor. Their new scrolling design delivers a familiar, enjoyable reading experience that is as user-friendly on mobile devices as it is on desktops.

Plus, the digital platform has allowed Skies to add even more dynamic and interactive content, including embedded videos and photo galleries. The response has been outstanding, with traffic and reader engagement higher than ever.

“Jen and Kaytlyn hit it out of the park with their redesigned digital issues, and we’re delighted to see them getting the recognition they deserve,” Reyno said.

In addition to the honourable mention for Skies, MHM Publishing editorial director Elan Head was the winner of the Single Article, B2B, Travel/Transportation category for her article “Recurring Nightmare,” or, “Why do helicopter crashes like Kobe Bryant’s keep happening?” That story appeared in the April/May 2020 issue of Vertical.
