Workers at the plant that supplied the Avro Arrow project back in the 1950s have ratified a new collective agreement with Magellan Aeorspace, ensuring a future for Canada’s role in the industry and delivering good news to the community.

Members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 4820 voted on March 27 for a new collective agreement that guarantees improvements in seniority, health and safety, scheduling, along with a boost in the workers’ pension plan and wage increases averaging 5.5 per cent over three years.

The new agreement also includes a profit-sharing plan. If the company’s profit targets are reached within a year, a one per cent bonus will be added to annual salaries.

The union also negotiated language that recognizes the impact of mental health and domestic violence on the workplace. As well, contributions to the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, the union’s international development and relief organization, were part of the agreement.

“This company has invested in advanced manufacturing techniques and clearly shows an interest in remaining competitive in the aerospace industry,” said USW Ontario director Marty Warren.

“Investing in its Haley workforce with a decent contract is part of that commitment.”

USW Local 4820 represents 383 Magellan employees in two bargaining units covering production and office workers.
