On the eve of the International Training and Education Conference (ITEC), Europe’s largest show for military training and simulation, CAE announced that the C-130 aeromedical evacuation training system for the United States Air Force at Dobbins Air Reserve Base (ARB) is now on-motion, fully operational and ready-for-training.

The addition of a motion platform for an aeromedical fuselage trainer is believed to be the first-of-its-kind in the world and will now provide U.S. Air Force aeromedical evacuation crews with a more realistic virtual training environment.

The C-130 Aeromedical Evacuation Training System will play a major role in providing highly realistic training to better prepare USAF aeromedical crews for pre-flight, emergency procedures and in-flight patient care.

The addition of a motion platform makes this high-fidelity trainer even more realistic and now enables the aeromedical crews to rehearse in a safe, immersive training environment, which will ultimately improve patient safety and survivability during rescue missions.

The electric motion system replicates the vibrations and turbulence often encountered during take-off, landing, and in-flight, thus delivering a more immersive and realistic aeromedical training environment. The motion system supports the entire 14,000 pound payload of the fully-equipped C-130 fuselage trainer.

The C-130 aeromedical fuselage trainer now moves across all six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF), including three rotational degrees of freedom (roll, pitch, yaw) and three linear degrees of freedom (surge, heave, sway).

In addition to the C-130 fuselage trainer, CAE’s comprehensive aeromedical evacuation training system includes human patient simulators from CAE Healthcare and a comprehensive curriculum, including portable instructor operator station to provide full control and customization of a variety of aeromedical training scenarios.

“We are pleased to partner with the U.S. Air Force to provide the world’s first motion-based aeromedical trainer that will help ensure aeromedical aircrews are fully prepared for the critical aeromedical evacuation mission,” said Ray Duquette, president and general manager, CAE USA.

“This program showcases CAE’s innovation and our ability to leverage our training systems integration expertise to help military customers enhance safety, efficiency and readiness.”

CAE’s aeromedical evacuation training system can be developed for a range of air mobility aircraft platforms, as well as for rotary-wing aircraft. CAE is currently developing additional aeromedical evacuation training systems for the U.S. Air Force to replicate the C-17 transport and KC-135 tanker configured for aeromedical missions.

These new training devices, to be delivered later in 2017, will also feature a motion system and include partial replicas of both the C-17 and KC-135 fuselages outfitted for the aeromedical evacuation mission. CAE Healthcare will provide high-fidelity patient simulators, instructors and training support services.
