More passengers travelled through the airport this summer than any other, mainly driven by the airport’s busiest month ever.

This July and August 895,381 passengers travelled through the airport, eclipsing last year’s mark of 863,942. August also set a new record for total passengers in a single month with 462,719, a 3.4 per cent increase over August 2017.

July was up 3.9 per cent over the previous July.

This growth can be attributed to an increase in both domestic and U.S. transborder traffic.

Traffic growth was also spurred on by low-cost carrier Flair Airlines, as well as Swoop Airlines, which entered the market in June.

“The increase in traffic this summer is directly connected to the growing interest in our city and province. Winnipeg and Manitoba are where people want to be, and we are seeing more and more traffic as a result,” said Barry Rempel, president and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority.

“WAA continues to work with our airline partners to improve service and add more destinations to connect our region to the world.”

Traffic at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport has outperformed expectations outlined in WAA’s current master plan.

This accelerated growth is expected to continue this fall, driven by Air Canada and WestJet, the low-cost carriers, and the start of the new charter season. Combined, it means more options to more destinations for travellers.

Winnipeg Richardson International Airport serves on average over 11,000 passengers per day with flights to over 60 nonstop destinations.

Winnipeg is also the number one dedicated freighter airport in Canada, keeping goods flowing efficiently and building on our community’s reputation as a transportation and logistics hub.
